You gotta love Jon Gruden's direct challenge to smilin' Cam Newton about how complicated the NFL game is, and how challenging that will be when he gets there.
And you also gotta cringe when Gruden claims that Auburn's "single number on a card" system of calling plays is "awesome."
No, that's not "awesome." That's called college. And it's over. If I'm an NFL fan, and I see this little video account of Newton's inability to recall a SINGLE huddle called play from college, I am burying my head under the pillow hoping my team takes somebody - anybody - else.
Auburn's "option" offense was really nothing of the kind. The plays were called ahead of time and Newton had very little to read and few real "options" and was based on the illusion of an option. Kudos to the offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn for A) making the jump with this offense from high school to the top of D1 and B) for being a good play caller.
ReplyDeleteIn the National Championship game we had two teams running a so-called option attack, with only Oregon actually making reads. This is not to criticize or say Newton won't be able to make the jump, just to point out the big adjustment he will have to make.

ReplyDeleteColdHardFootballFacts has him as a top producer in 2010, and equates that with where they SHOULD be drafted. Sorry CHFF...gotta disagree with ya on this one. Your right Czabe, this is far too much of a risk to go #1 for my team. Probably wouldn't draft him before the 4th round. Then it's cool...a project to bring along slowly for a few years. (He's LOVE me as a coach.) ;)
As a DIE HARD Auburn fan.....I have to say that watching this on TV yesterday was PAINFUL!!!
ReplyDeleteWAR EAGLE!!
Could this be why Jason Campbell "struggled" as an NFL QB even after being project under Gibbs?
ReplyDeleteIt has been 20 years since I played HS QB and I can still remember a handful of calls. I cannot believe Cam couldn't muster ONE after just a few months. SCARY!
ReplyDeleteIt seems that Cam is oblivious to the negatives of not being able to recall a play. Using the negativity of others as ammunition is a good thing, but.... knowing what you don't know is far less dangerous than not knowing what you don't know.
ReplyDeleteGentlemen, I present to you JaMarcus Russell, v 2.0.
ReplyDeleteCzabe- that warning sound clip you played during this segment on your show had me rolling....WHAA WHAA WHAA WHAA!!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't think he will be as pathetic as Russell but I would say Vince Young 2.0
ReplyDeletean in-between of junkmarcus and VY. so yes very pathetic. 'Skins fans should only hope he goes before our pick comes up. maybe we should just suck ass this year and hope for Luck next.
ReplyDeleteNice video, I think Cam is a great QB, he just need a better team.
